Olfactory family

Primary: Amber

Secondary: Resinous · Leathery · Balsamic

Olfactory profile

Warm and resinous from the first moment, with a dried-fruit sweetness — prune, raisin — sitting over a dry leathery base. As it develops, the ambery character deepens and a faint smoky, almost incense-like facet appears. It has very little top and enormous persistence: a material that does almost nothing for the first minute and then stays on the blotter for a week. Cistus is the natural backbone of a classical amber accord.

Character

Warm, dry and extremely tenacious. Low diffusion, high substantivity — a fixative that also contributes a strong character of its own.

Botanical origin

Botanical nameCistus ladaniferus — trade-standard attribution
Part usedAerial parts (labdanum gum)
Nature of materialNatural extract (resin-derived)

Cistus materials in perfumery are conventionally produced from Cistus ladaniferus, the source of labdanum. We state this as the trade-standard attribution; botanical confirmation for this lot can be requested.

Origin

Trade designation: Cistus / Ciste Épuré Absolute 100%

Documented origin: Spain / France

Manufacturer: Düllberg Konzentra. “Épuré” denotes a purified quality; “100%” indicates the material is supplied undiluted.

Extraction method

Solvent extraction of the resinous plant material, purified to the “épuré” quality. Full process detail is proprietary to the manufacturer: consult technical documentation.

Use in perfumery

Position: Base note · fixative · structural material

The natural core of an amber base, and a fixative for lighter materials above it. Also used in leather and tobacco accords, and in chypres where a resinous floor is wanted under the moss. Because it has almost no volatility, its contribution is felt in the dry-down rather than on first spray.

Effect in composition

Adds depth, warmth and persistence. Anchors volatile materials, gives a formula a resinous floor, and contributes the dried-fruit sweetness that distinguishes a natural amber from a purely synthetic one.

Blends well with

Olfactory affinities — not a statement of shared sourcing.

  • Rose Bulgaria Absolute — rose-amber structures
  • Oakmoss INCO 20 — classical chypre base
  • Agarwood / Oud Oil — resinous woody depth
  • Leather Oud — leather-amber constructions
  • Iris Resinoid Extra — dry powdery counterweight
  • Civet — Civette Extra — animalic amber

Perfumer’s perspective

Among the best value materials in this catalogue: a natural of real character at a price that permits generous dosage. Worth considering whenever a formula lacks a base, or when an amber accord built on synthetics needs a natural signature to make it convincing.
