Olfactory family

Primary: Powdery

Secondary: Waxy · Rooty · Violet

Olfactory profile

The waxiest of the iris forms. The plant waxes retained in a concrete give an immediate creamy, almost cosmetic impression before the rooty violet character comes through, and they mute the material’s projection considerably — this is iris at its most closed and buttery. Underneath, the same cool earthy signature as the resinoid, but heavier and slower to open. Its behaviour in the bottle is as distinctive as its smell: firm at room temperature, requiring heat or solvent to work.

Character

Creamy, dry and very tenacious. The least diffusive iris form in this catalogue, and the one that contributes most texture.

Botanical origin

Botanical nameIris sp. — species not documented; on request
Part usedRhizome
Nature of materialNatural extract (concrete)

Iris materials in perfumery are normally produced from Iris pallida or Iris germanica. We do not state which applies to this lot until the manufacturer confirms it in writing.

Origin

Trade designation: Iris Concrete

Documented origin: France

Supplier: Claus Nitsche & Sohn GmbH.

Extraction method

Solvent extraction of the dried, aged rhizome, stopped at the concrete stage — that is, before the alcohol washing that would remove the plant waxes and yield an absolute.

Use in perfumery

Position: Base note · fixative · texture material

Chosen over a resinoid or absolute when the waxy body of the material is wanted as well as its odour — typically in creamy, cosmetic or makeup-facing structures. Requires gentle warming or dissolution in a compatible solvent before weighing; it will not dose accurately cold.

Effect in composition

Adds texture, creaminess and volume in the base. Softens angular woods and gives a formula a matte, cosmetic quality that neither iris absolute nor synthetic irones reproduce on their own.

Blends well with

Olfactory affinities — not a statement of shared sourcing.

  • Iris Resinoid Extra — layered iris texture
  • Mimosa Absolue Naturelle — powdery floral
  • Rose Otto — Bulgarian — soft rose-iris structures
  • Cistus / Ciste Épuré Absolute — amber base
  • Oakmoss INCO 20 — dry chypre
  • Natural Raspberry Ketone — iris-berry contrast

Perfumer’s perspective

The form to reach for when the brief is about texture — skin, powder, makeup, cashmere. Practical note: pre-dilute a working stock rather than reheating the concrete repeatedly, since repeated melting is both inconvenient and hard on the material.
