Agarwood / Oud Oil — Laos "Palao 2"
Olfactory family
Primary: Woody
Secondary: Resinous · Animalic · Balsamic
Olfactory profile
Opens dark and pungent, with the barnyard and fermented facets typical of Southeast Asian agarwood distillation — not a clean wood note, and not intended to be. Within an hour the sharpness settles and a resinous, dried-fruit sweetness emerges over a deep woody base, warm and slightly leathery. It is exceptionally tenacious: perceptible on a blotter for weeks. Oud profiles vary widely by region, by tree and by distillation, which is why the specific reference designation matters more here than with almost any other natural.

Use in perfumery
Position: Base note · structural material
The natural core of an oud composition, and a base material of exceptional persistence in woody-oriental and leather structures. Used at low percentages — its animalic top can read as spoilage to an unprepared audience, so many formulators pair it with rose, saffron or resins that frame the character rather than expose it.
Effect in composition
Adds woody depth, resinous weight and enormous persistence. Gives a base a natural complexity that synthetic oud accords approximate but do not match, and lends a formula unmistakable identity.
Blends well with
Olfactory affinities — not a statement of shared sourcing.
- Rose Otto — Turkish (Anatolian) — the classical rose-oud pairing
- Rose Bulgaria Absolute — denser rose-oud
- Cistus / Ciste Épuré Absolute — resinous amber support
- Leather Oud — reinforces the leather facet
- Civet — Civette Extra — deep animalic base
- Jasmine Sambac Absolute — floral counterweight
Perfumer’s perspective
A material to use deliberately and sparingly. Its cost, its regulatory load and its sheer persistence all argue against casual experimentation — but for a brief that genuinely requires natural oud, there is no substitute, and the documented CITES paperwork on this lot is what makes it usable commercially rather than merely interesting.
