Olfactory profile

Undiluted, the material is sharp and frankly faecal — an assessment at full strength tells you very little about how it behaves in a formula. Worked from dilution, the faecal character recedes and what remains is a warm, musky, skin-like radiance with a faint floral-honeyed undertone. Its distinguishing property is not its smell but its effect: it makes surrounding materials appear rounder and more alive, and it carries a formula outward without adding perceptible volume of its own.

Use in perfumery

Position: Base note · fixative · trace modifier

Used at trace level, from dilution, to give a base warmth and radiance. Classically employed in orientals, chypres and heavy florals, where a few hundredths of a percent adds the impression of skin beneath the composition.

Effect in composition

Adds depth, warmth and diffusion. Increases the perceived richness and persistence of surrounding materials, and softens the boundary between a fragrance and the skin it sits on.

Perfumer’s perspective

A material of real effect and real complication. Beyond the olfactory question there is a regulatory and ethical one, and both are reasons to approach it deliberately rather than casually. If you are working to a natural or cruelty-free brief, this is not the material for it — well-made synthetic animalics will serve the same structural purpose without the paperwork.
