Olfactory profile

Deeper and darker than any rose distillate — the opening is jammy and slightly winey, without the green-metallic lift of an otto. The heart carries honey, tea and a faint spiced warmth, and the material behaves as a base note rather than a heart note, staying on the blotter long after a distilled oil has faded. Where an otto suggests the flower in the air, the absolute suggests the flower crushed.

Use in perfumery

Provides the weight of a rose accord. Commonly combined with a rose otto — the distillate supplies lift and freshness, the absolute supplies body and persistence — to build a rose that reads complete from top to dry-down.

Effect in composition

Adds depth and tenacity, rounds sharp edges, and reinforces sweetness in a floral heart. In a chypre or an oriental it acts as a bridge between the florals above and the resins below.

Perfumer’s perspective

The material to reach for when a rose has to survive into the dry-down or hold its own beneath resins and woods. Its jammy weight is also its limitation: used alone it can read old-fashioned, which is why most formulators pair it with a distillate or a fresh green material.
